“Please tell the people in your country, a child in the Congo dies every day so that they can plug in their phones”(Kara, 2023).As technology like Electric Vehicles becomes more popular in the fight against climate change, more minerals such as cobalt are mined to meet the demand. Cobalt is used in batteries to lower the risk of battery fires and to increase the mileage in electric vehicles. The issue is that most - around 80% - of the cobalt deposits with high-quality and high percentage cobalt are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa where regulations are poor.The DRC used to be an ancient sea, and when the sea dried up cobalt deposits were left behind, and the abundance of resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been dubbed a &quot;resource curse&quot; as it leads to extreme exploitation and harm to the Congolese workers. The economy of the DRC directly relies on exporting raw cobalt to refineries in China, Japan, South Korea, Finland, and Belgium. From there, engineers manufacture batteries that go to multi-billion dollar tech companies such as Tesla, Ford, General Motors, BMW, Microsoft, LTC, Apple, Samsung, Google, and Dell. Most of the cobalt that&apos;s mined in the DRC is bought by China, and one prospector said that the cobalt gets under-weighed so that the miners don&apos;t get paid their fair share and China gets to keep more of the money. The Congolese peoples&apos; entire livelihoods depend on cobalt mining and thousands of children below the age of 10 are forced to work in these mines. The multi-billion dollar companies continue to thrive off of the pain and death of the Congolese. This is the Colonial Legacy.

StoryMaps.com Retirement and Migration to ArcGIS Online

After one year, you will need to purchase an ArcGIS Online subscription to continue using ArcGIS StoryMaps. Check out the StoryMaps <link>retirement page</link> for more information on the ArcGIS Online subscription options.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. If you do not migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you can save any content you would like to keep before the June 30, 2025, retirement date. The options for saving content include saving stories as a PDF and saving frames using a screen recording.

You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
