The Puerto Rican sugar industry had a large impact on the development of Puerto Rican society and the territory’s economy as a whole. Anchoring our discussion in the events between the early 19th century to the late 20th century, we will analyze the sugar economy, its aftermath, and its connection to worker&apos;s rights. Southern Puerto Rico was the center of the country’s sugar economy, municipalities such as Guayama and Aguirre housed multiple large sugar farms and refineries over time and were some of the most economically productive areas in Puerto Rico. Throughout the 19th century these farms or “ingenios” (Figueroa) were owned by white colonial settlers and were operated on the labor of black enslaved workers. In 1873 when slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico, owners of farms were forced to transition from enslaved to free laborers. However, ownership of the most productive farms shifted from white Puerto Ricans to American firms in 1898 with the United States&apos; annexation of Puerto Rico as a territory. Throughout this project, we will analyze the history and intricacies of the economic landscape of Puerto Rico’s sugar economy and its relation to enslaved labor, the rights of workers post-emancipation and laborers&apos; political advocacy, and the evolution of the sugar industry with the introduction of American firms.

ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
