The origin of the word facism comes from “fascio” which means a group or cluster and is used in the context of a cluster of plants or branches. One of the first instances of “fascio” was a political movement led by Sicilian, peasant socialists in Italy in 1893, but this quickly died out (Prezzolini 1927). Other groups such as the Fasci di combattimento, who were in favor of Italy’s intervention in the European war around 1915, also used this term. The war had such a detrimental effect on Italy in many aspects of life and industry, including the split of the political left over Italy’s position in the war. This political instability was taken advantage of by Mussolini to “solve the country&apos;s problems”. Benito Mussolini (who was also a part of the fasci di combattimento) was a part of a different group later, the Faces of Revolutionary Action. Him and his members were the ones who coined the term “fascism” and spread the idea/movement during the war. His appointment as prime minister after pressures and the March on Rome did not immediately put into effect the full force of a dictatorship. Rather, he removed opposition through secret police/BlackShirts, outlawing labor strikes and consolidating power throw laws that transformed Italy into a one-party dictatorship and even wanted to create a totalitarian state (Wikipedia 2024). From the beginning, winning the election was due to intimidation and this kind of pressure and control continued on by heavily monitoring Italian citizens and sentencing many to prison for support and involvement in other political parties or even for saying the wrong thing in public.
