Geysers represent a familiar and special type of surface expression of Yellowstone's active hydrothermal systems. They are especially abundant in the Lower, Midway, and Upper Geyser Basins near Old Faithful. Geyser eruptions can occur on a regular schedule, like Old Faithful in Upper Geyser Basin, or can occur only occasionally or unpredictably like Steamboat in Norris Geyser Basin. Geyser eruption intervals and activity vary due to changes in the subsurface natural plumbing system – some of which we don't yet understand well. All geysers require two fundamental features: a subsurface reservoir where hot waters can accumulate and reach boiling temperatures, and a constriction in the geyser conduit that provides throttling and focusing of erupting fluids. For a geyser to erupt, the subsurface reservoir boils, builds pressure, then ejects small amounts of water. When enough water is ejected the pressure drops, causing the remaining water to become a steam-water mixture that is forcibly ejected through the constricted conduit. Geysers may erupt through narrow cones, large silica structures, or hot spring pools (called fountain geysers).

To get started, select a section of the styling panel and make some adjustments. As you adjust different elements, you’ll see this story adjust to demonstrate how they look. ArcGIS <link>StoryMaps</link> is the professional version of StoryMaps and is available as part of <link2>ArcGIS Online</link2>. Both products share similar storytelling capabilities, so if you are familiar with StoryMaps, you'll feel right at home with ArcGIS StoryMaps. You are invited to migrate your account and content to ArcGIS Online where you can continue storytelling with maps. With ArcGIS Online, you’ll get access to ArcGIS StoryMaps and the easy-to-use story builder you are familiar with, plus so much more!

If you migrate your account to ArcGIS Online, you will have access to your existing stories, collections, and themes via ArcGIS StoryMaps, as well as an array of additional ArcGIS capabilities. (Your frames will be migrated and accessible when support for frames is added to ArcGIS StoryMaps.)
